Tech Grabs Hometown Pass Rusher

Tyler Vernon switched his commitment from Army to Georgia Tech as a preferred walkon last night. Mill Creek‘s all-time leading sacker told us why he made the switch.

“This is my goal to stay close to home with my friends and family and play football at the highest possible level, all while gaining access to a great education.”

vernon2.0Vernon (6’4″ 240-pounds) committed to Army on November 2nd. It wasn’t until coach Brad Waggoner from Georgia Tech reached out recently. He met with Tech coaches on Monday about potentially playing at Bobby Dodd.

Vernon told Recruit Georgia about the meeting and what they discussed.

“I met with GT on Monday and they assured me a spot on the roster and that would allow me to attend camp in June.” Vernon continued, “They also want me to redshirt to give me some time to develop this next year under their strength and conditioning program.”

Paul Johnson has a history of picking up preferred walkons and starting them. Sean Bedford was a 2 time All ACC center and Robbie Godhigh (Harrison HS) started at a-back for two years. Even last season, Isaiah Willis, from Lassiter, had a lot of reps and also started games at a-back. If Vernon puts in the work, he will see playing time at Georgia Tech – coach Johnson plays no favorites on his roster.

Georgia Tech is landing a top-flight player from one of the toughest regions in the country. Vernon is battle-tested against consensus 3 & 4 star offensive tackles from all across the state.

The star defensive end’s motor is one of the best in Georgia and his relentless pursuit of the ball carrier is remarkable. His determination to get after the quarterback is infectious to teammates and exciting to watch.

Vernon’s final remark exemplifies that determination.

“I know that I can succeed anywhere I go.”
