Turner’s Spring Break Tour Ends with an Offer

Rising senior linebacker Erick Turner went on a recruiting trek last week throughout the northeast corner of the United States to get a first-hand view of the prestigious academic colleges recruiting the student-athlete. Accompanying Erick on the trip was his father, Frederick, who took the week off from work to make the critical recruiting trip with his son. The two Turners started off their trip visiting Harvard, MIT, Penn, Bucknell, Cornell, Colgate, Princeton and finished off their tour at Columbia, where the youngest Turner received his first college offer.

For Turner, getting to see the various sights and sounds of the northeast was exciting, but it was doing it all with a familiar face that made the week special. “Getting to spend time with my dad and learning about colleges I might be attending in the future,” Turner said about his favorite part of the week.

After following recruiting in the state of Georgia the last few years, very few families have handled a college recruitment similar to the Turners’. Throughout the process they have made realistic decisions that have ensured the best possible opportunities.

Heading into the trip, Erick’s expectations for an offer were reserved to say the least. “I was hopeful that I might receive one, but doubted that I actually would,” he said. Turner then talked about what it felt like receiving his first offer, “The feeling is amazing; knowing that I have a guaranteed opportunity to attend such a prestigious institution is fantastic.”

Visiting all the colleges last week and meeting their coaching staffs was an eye-opening opportunity for the tenacious Lanier linebacker. Looking back at the week, there was a lot to reflect on. “I learned that it takes a whole lot of time and dedication. I learned that you won’t succeed without a little bit of tenacity and a whole lot of heart.”

Turner was an important player last season for Lanier and finished the season with 72 tackles, 5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. He also received Honorable Mention All-Region, Honorable Mention All-Gwinnett County, Gwinnett Touchdown Club Player of the Month for October, and was on the Gwinnett County defensive honor roll 4 times last fall season.

Heading into his final year of high school football Turner just has one simple goal to achieve, “I want to be the best leader and player for my high school team that I can be.”
