Golden Gophers Grab Javan Hawes

Big news for Minnesota this weekend when Sandy Creek senior wide receiver Javan Hawes pledged his commitment to the Golden Gophers.

Hawes took to Twitter and announced his decision Saturday night after touring the campus:

The 6′, 182-pound wide receiver chose Minnesota over offers from eight other programs including Georgia Southern, Purdue and Appalachian State. Minnesota offered on July 8th and was the first Power 5 program to do so.

Hawes made his decision following a visit this weekend to The Land of 10,000 Lakes with his family. After soaking in the scenery and seeing what life would be like as a Golden Gopher, Hawes was ready to make a decision.CnhohkLUMAAfzTD

We asked the Class of ’17 athlete what it feels like to be done with the recruiting process. “It’s really a blessing to know my college is paid for and knowing my parents can stop worrying,” Hawes said.

Making a decision prior to the season was very important to Hawes, and now the rising senior is focused on being successful this fall. “Mainly I’m committed to a college before my season starts, so I don’t have to focus on that, and I can just focus on making my team the best we can be on my last go round!”

The Sandy Creek prospect fits nicely into Minnesota’s spread offensive attack, and his versatility to play different wide receiver positions is a nice addition. Wide receivers coach Brian Anderson was Hawes’ lead recruiter (he’s a longtime Recruit Georgia follower, too), and this is a good pickup for his squad.

Hawes has legit speed around the 4.45-4.5 range and is an explosive athlete with a 39″ vertical jump. Our staff expects Hawes to be one of the breakout players in the state of Georgia next year, so good on the Minnesota coaching staff for receiving his commitment early.

Hawes is the seventh commitment for Minnesota in the 2017 recruiting cycle and the first player from Georgia. Coach Anderson has been recruiting the state heavily over the last few years for the Golden Gophers, so expect more targets to pop up in the coming months.
