Beasley Taking Senior Year in Stride

For the last few years, Jaylon Beasley has been an undersized demolition man at linebacker, who was routinely blitzed off the edge into the backfield at great success. Anyone can see that Beasley can play the game, just take a moment, and watch his junior film at Northview high school, and it’s evident that the 2020 athlete finds himself around the football a lot. Even the last few seasons where Beasley played under 180 lbs., he has logged good production at linebacker, and heading into his senior year he is now 185 lbs., which makes his switch over to safety even more interesting.

The bigger, more athletic Beasley will be playing out in space for the first time at the varsity level, and he is excited about the opportunity. “I’ve played outside LB for 3 years, so this will be my first season playing at the safety position.” Beasley continued, “I’ve train with a personal trainer, and with my position coach the entire offseason to prepare myself for the switch.”

With schools like UCF, Austin Peay, Rockford College and Tennessee State currently showing interest, Beasley sees this moment as a big opportunity in terms of recruiting, “I’m aware most colleges are waiting to see my play at that position before they really start to recruit me. I feel I’m ready, comfortable, and confident that I will be a big impact on the field at safety.”

Early summer film has shown that Beasley has put in good work. He shows a light back pedal, and looks crisp sliding his feet in pass coverage. Sure, there will be some positional hiccups, it’s a new position, but the fast-flowing senior has three D1 linebackers in front of him at Denmark, and he will be allowed to play with his ears pinned-back reading the play.

Changing schools over to Denmark was a big move for Beasley as the Danes come in as the #2 team in our Preseason Power Rankings for Class 4-A. With several more top athletes transferring into the 2nd year school, they are quickly growing a bigger target on their back going into the 2019 season. For a senior like Beasley, he is keeping perspective by living in the moment, but also has big aspirations for his fellow Danes.

“Being a senior, it comes with responsibility, whether you want it or not. One of those responsibilities is a being a leader, so my goals for this season is become the best leader I can on and off the field. Hopefully with the leadership of the other seniors, we can lead our team into the playoffs, and give our school an opportunity to fight for a championship.”

Right now, it’s the dead period, so not much is going on in the world of recruiting. Turn the calendar forward a month from now, and a 2020 recruit like Beasley should be fielding D1 interest from across the east coast. Beasley’s hard work is evident, just watch his improved footwork coupled with his outstanding open field tackling that will surely catch the eye of D1 schools at strong safety.

As it stands, Beasley has no visits planned yet for this fall stating, “I feel that will take care itself as the season play out. As teams show love, I will show love back.”
