Our Week 2 Player of the Week goes to Flowery Branch junior Griffin Harper. The impactful junior had 177 yards rushing plus a touchdown and on defense he accumulated 8 tackles, a sack, a fumble, and a forced fumble.
His play was demonstrative, elevating Flowery Branch to a 23-13 win over Habersham Central, giving the Falcons an even 1-1 record.
“I’m having a great year so far,” Harper exclaimed.
On offense, the junior has 33 carries, 217 yards, and 1 touchdown, while on defense, Harper has produced 13 tackles, 6 for a loss, 1 sack, and the previously mentioned forced and recovered fumbles.
The All-State wrestler is solidly built at 5’10” and 190 lbs. In the classroom, he is a fantastic student sporting a 4.3 GPA, so we are sure that high-academic schools will be adding Harper to the recruiting board soon.
“My goals for the season are to get some looks from colleges and lead my team to the playoffs,” Harper said.
Watching his early season film at the top of this article, you’ll notice that Harper plays with intensity. Lining up at the b-back position, the hard-nosed back will drive a pile forward to get extra yardage. Harper’s north-south running style is an ideal fit for that offensive system, and you have to love his ability to find the endzone.
“I’ve improved a lot both on and off the field in the past year as a leader and working hard in the offseason to improve my game,” Harper said about his progress.
Harper has made massive strides in the last year with his development going from a solid contributor on defense to a major focal point of the offense. Still, the junior is waiting for his recruitment to take off. His breakout season is just beginning to catch the attention of media across the state, including the Gainesville Times naming Harper their Offensive Player of the Week.
For now, Harper will stay patient with recruiting. After all, he has another big game this Friday against Forsyth Central, proving to be another great opportunity to display his two-way talent.
