Holy Innocents’ junior Ryan Woods is looking to make a difference this season. The 6’1″, 200-lb. passer had a solid sophomore campaign where he showed flashes, especially making plays with his legs, but a year later, Woods is becoming a refined passer who can splinter a defense into pieces.
“I would describe my junior year right now as a statement that our team can play with anyone and is fun to be around the guys on the team and keeping a strong bond together,” Woods said.
This season, Woods has thrown for 430 yards, completing 66% of his passes for an average of 16 yards per completion. His 140.2 QBR is among the best of any passer in the 4-2A Private, and that is a major credit to the hard work he put into this offseason.
“I have improved the most as a leader and improved my anticipation on throws,” he said.
That’s paying dividends with a nearly 20% increase in his completion % from his sophomore season. Plus, his running in the open field shows creativity, balance, and good acceleration to find openings that yield chunks of yardage.
Just last week, Woods caught a pass on a reverse play after leaking out from the backfield. A Mount Vernon defensive back closed quickly, but Woods kept his composure, stuttering, then side-stepping, sending the defensive back onto his rear end. Then Woods casually ran by, finishing off the end zone with the student section going wild.
The blowout win ended 51-14, giving Holy Innocents’ their first ranked win of the season, and moving the program up to #3 in our Private rankings. With a team full of talent, Holy Innocents’ looks like a team that could compete for a state title this season.
“My goals are to win the region and win state,” Woods confirmed.
That will be no small order with GAC and Calvary Day both loaded with FBS talent across the board, but Holy Innocents’ has plenty of talent, with the JR QB being among the best players on the program.
Woods said that no schools are recruiting him at the moment, so he doesn’t have any college visits planned this fall. The 2028 QB said he is hopeful something will materialize soon, so be sure to check back to @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X for the latest on Woods and athletes across the state.
