Newton came into HS with some legit accolades, but for the most part, still trying to find his niche. He played well his sophomore year in limited moments – his 6’3″ frame allows him to see over the offensive line and he makes well timed passes on shorter passes. He makes okay reads, there are certainly more open players on his film at times, or it takes too long for him to get the ball out. Newton passes the eye ball test, and his junior year he is putting together some solid performances. He throws an okay ball, it’s always a perfect spiral and he shot puts a lot. His frame in general, and open field running one of his better skill sets. Newton has the potential to weigh over 230 and still chug away some big yards, then deliver some punishment. Right now he needs to be a bit more explosive in his step. I don’t know if he’s really a dual threat at this point honestly, but there is upside no doubt.
