Returning as the starting quarterback for Carrollton High School is athletic junior Mark Wright. The Class of ’18 prospect worked very hard this offseason and is just coming off a 16-6 season-opening victory over Newnan. We spoke to Wright prior to the Newnan game, and he outlined how his offseason has prepared him for the fall.

“It went great. I’m bigger, faster and stronger. I’m not as tall as I’d like to be. My dad is 6’3″, and he didn’t hit his growth spurt until he was 17!” Wright has gained 15 pounds this offseason and dropped his 40 time below 4.7. These improvements plus his attention to detail in the film room should pay major dividends this 2016 season.

Last Thursday against Newnan, Wright completed 10 of 18 passes, and the offense was mostly lackluster. “(I) don’t know the yards yet, but slow start from our offense, luckily the defense played really well. The offense will get better and better week by week.”

Wright shows a ton of promise as a dual-threat quarterback at the next level. He has a strong arm and a natural feel when sitting in the pocket. The junior QB likens his game to Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson, saying, “He’s smart, can use his legs if he has to and he has a strong but accurate arm.”

Recruiting-wise, Wright is only hearing from Cincinnati at the moment and doesn’t appear to have any visit dates set in stone. “It depends on my parents’ work schedule and how far we can go on any given Saturday,” Wright said.

Looking to build off a promising sophomore year, Wright has outlined some goals for himself personally and his Trojans squad. “Become Region Champs, State Champs, get all A’s this semester and that growth spurt to come, so I will have some great D-1 options.”

Carrollton gets next week off and will play Riverdale on September 2nd, a game they will be favored to win. Wright and his teammates will take full advantage of the upcoming bye week to continue to improve on the offense. The Trojans could be grooving in the coming weeks and break into our Top 10 rankings before you know it. They have a potential big game against Woodland-Bartow on 9/23 when both teams could be undefeated, making for a must-see game in the state.
