Broughton Brings Swagger on Defense

In a blink of an eye, Marquel Broughton can change the fortunes of a game. The senior safety is a smart player, who sees the field exceptionally well, and once he has a beat on the pass, it is his for the taking.

His Mountain View team emerged as a surprise program last year in Gwinnett, and his play didn’t go unnoticed. He was voted 2nd Team All-Gwinnett County and 1st Team All-Region.

Last year, the senior had what should have been 5 interceptions (3 ended up being called back), and led his team in tackles with 81. At 5’10”, and 185 pounds, he might not be the biggest safety, but he is an instinctual player, who can jump a route, and break up the reception.

Unfortunately during the offseason Broughton suffered an injury and it has slowed down his recruitment, “The offseason was hard for me. I broke my ankle in 7v7 back in March. I watched almost all summer, so I didn’t get to camp anywhere.”

The Mountain View star defender has found a positive from the injury despite being unable to participate at camps, “Being out this summer has helped me improve my vision on the field, so now I see a lot more when I’m out there, and can play fast.”

Broughton has a really high football IQ already, and that is evident in just the angles he takes to the ball carrier. On film you will consistently see him track the ball carrier perfectly and deliver a textbook tackle. It’s obvious that his attention to detail is refined, and over years of practice, his muscle memory at the defensive back position has become 2nd nature.

He currently holds offers from Lafayette College, Army, Lenior-Rhyne, and Stetson. The extremely underrated defensive back has no visits scheduled out yet, but is planning on setting them up soon. This biggest goal he has set out for his team is winning region, which would be a historic moment for his Mountain View squad. With all the seniors they have coming back, especially guys like Broughton roaming the defensive backfield, a region championship is certainly in the cards.
