Zane Ashley Makes a Splash on Defense

Bursting onto the scene this fall in Georgia is Zane Ashley (RG Profile). The 2017 safety prospect from Peachtree Ridge plays in arguably the best high school defensive backfield in the country and is having an outstanding start to the season.

Statistically speaking, Zane has tallied 47 tackles (23 solo and 24 assisted), one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

zane ashley gdpotmThe surrounding high school coaches have taken notice, and tonight the junior safety will be named the Gwinnett County Defensive Player of the Month. An incredible feat, especially when just last spring he was playing QB for the Lions.

Curt Ashley (Zane’s father) spoke to us about his recruitment and making the transition from offense to defense.

“His goal, over the summer, was to put on some much needed weight,” Curt said. “He enrolled in an extensive weight lifting/nutrition program and was able to add about 12-15 lbs over the summer.”

Zane Ashley might be a new name to many college coaches. His father told Recruit Georgia that “unfortunately Zane did not attend any football camps this summer.”

Still, his early-season performance has turned many heads his way. So far, “Zane has received correspondence from Duke, Georgia Tech, Purdue, Michigan State, Old Dominion, Dartmouth, Penn, Middle Tennessee, Ga. Southern, and Mercer.”

Zane visited Georgia Tech earlier this month, and defensive coordinator Ted Roof is personally recruiting him. He also had plans to visit Duke last weekend, but we cannot confirm at this time he made the visit. Purdue has also begun pursuing the 4.0 GPA student, but scheduling a visit this fall could prove to be impossible due to football conflicts.
