Walton’s Gibson Standing Tall

Walton high school defensive back BJ Gibson more or less broke onto the scene last year when he made the game-winning block against North Gwinnett at the Corky Kell Classic at the start of the 2017 season. The lanky cornerback has certainly always caught our attention, and just this week he has been confirmed to be 6’5″ tall.

That easily puts Gibson as the tallest cornerback in the state of Georgia, and quite possibly the entire southeast. That sort of length means there is some obvious upside in Gibson, and in just the last two weeks Gibson has earned FBS offers from Navy, Liberty, Temple and Kent State.

The offer train doesn’t seem to be letting up, heck we have just barely left the station. With the April 15th contact period just a few days off, colleges will be all over the Walton campus to checkout the high upside talent in Gibson.

The Walton staff seems to believe Gibson is on the precipice of a offer explosion. Recruiting/academic coordinator Monty Bumper had this to say about Gibson, “BJ is just hitting the tip of the iceberg with his talent. He has a very good upside and a lot of confidence in his ability. His family has great character and they are extremely supportive of him and our program.”

Head football coach Daniel Brunner for Walton also believes in his talented young defensive back. “Sky is the limit for BJ!” Brunner said. “He’s a tremendous young man, and football player!”

Gibson has been all over this offseason taking visits to strong academic colleges like Wake Forest, Syracuse and Vanderbilt. He has a planned upcoming visit to Iowa this weekend, they have not offered him yet, but there is certainly some promise to the visit.

The 2019 defensive back is absolutely a player to keep an eye on over the next few months. At 6’5″ and a ton of experience playing defensive back for Walton, we expect more colleges to offer, and for him to be well over double-digits by the time spring practice starts up at Raider Valley.
