Starting the season at the #2 spot in our Class A DI rankings is Thomasville. The program has fantastic skill players and dynamic defenders, but another position group that shines is the offensive line, where senior Jaylen Walden is a cornerstone blocker.
The powerful 6’1″ 295 offensive lineman began the year with some explosive blocks in their 35-12 victory over rival Brooks County in Week 1. Walden was unleashing monumental blocks, which earned him a spot on our ‘Bully Squad’ for Week 1. After a tumultuous vote, especially in the final few minutes, Walden amazingly tied with Mason Townsend for OL of the Week with exactly 986 votes.
Back to the win against Brooks County, who was ranked the Preseason #2 team in Class A DII, and the early season win sets the tone for 2024. Walden feels like this victory is just the beginning of greatness.
“That there is more to come; I’m here to finish it and go all the way,” he said.
Walden has worked hard this offseason to improve his fundamentals, but it’s the mental side of the game where he has seen the most progress.
“I feel like I improved the most with turning the page because when I used to mess up a play or mess my blocking assignment I used to get in my feelings and not worry about the next play. Also, I improved on being a leader I used to just sit back and be quiet, and not lead or coach up my teammates.”
That maturation has allowed Walden to grow as a leader, lining up with his goals for the remainder of the season.
“My goals for the season are to dominate every game we play and then when we get into region play we can go be great and we can win a region Championship. Also, when we get to playoffs, Thomasville will be an elite powerhouse and we will go all the way to the 1-A State championship where we win and go 15-0. When that is over, I pray that I make first team all-region, first team all-state, and one of the best offensive linemen in 1-A.”
Walden’s physicality at the point of attack will be a weapon for Thomasville. He has a wide base, strong legs to drive out defenders, and a toughness to his game that permeates a hog-molly mindset. As a run blocker, he does a great job getting to the 2nd level and creating impactful blocks.
With recruiting, Walden hopes his senior year will provide an opportunity to turn some heads.
“As of right now, I don’t have any visits or offers yet. I’m hoping to receive some. I’m looking for a home so I can play at the next level. I have talked with the Charlotte, Georgia State, Cumberland, Albany State, and I know there is more to come.”
Recruiting is a game of patience, and Walden’s mindset will take him far. The senior is a talented blocker who can plant defenders into the ground, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear the latest on Walden and athletes everwhere in Georgia.
