Taz Smith is taking advantage of his opportunities this fall, and through the first three games of the season, he has 164 receiving yards, 119 rushing yards, and 3 touchdowns. The Johns Creek transfer is coming off a season-ending injury in 2023 but already looks to be among the most dynamic players for the top-rated Gainesville Red Elephants.
“My senior year is going well I would say. Started with a jet sweep touchdown in week 1 and a big win against Marietta,” Smith said.
Smith has football in his blood. His father was a star at Michigan and played ball for the Steelers in the NFL. Seeing that level of commitment, even through highlights, has provided the senior with a great outlook on what it takes to be a difference-maker at the next level.
During the offseason, Smith’s focus turned to recovery from his injury, and he talked about dealing with it and the opportunities at Gainesville.
“I was blessed to transfer to Gainesville after my injury which I feel great coming back from. I’m looking to prove this season that I’m a really underrated guy and I’m going to keep working,” he said.
On the recruiting front, Smith gave us a quick update and talked about his film.
“Recruiting is going well, My early season film will be coming out in about a week and I’ll know where I’ll be visiting this fall then.”
With it being his final season of football, Smith has expectations beyond lifting his recruiting exposure. He also wants to send Gainesville to the state title game where he can help win it all.
“The goal is to win a State Championship with my guys and glorify God through it all,” he said.
Smith’s dynamic touchdown against Westlake showcases his ability to create in tight spaces. He took a poor snap when punting, and was able to cut through the return team for a huge touchdown that went the length of the field. Most impressively, his speed burned everyone in pursuit, making the chaotic play look rather easy as he crossed the goal line.
That kind of speed is eye-catching, and that’s why college programs from around the country are continuing to take interest, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia to hear the latest on the senior and athletes all across the state of Georgia.
