All-State CB Christopher Smith Talks Recruitment

One of the real emerging cornerback prospects for the Class of 2018 is Hapeville Charter’s Christopher Smith II. The 2018 recruit played mostly nickleback as a sophomore but made a jump this season to starting corner and did not disappoint, earning an all-state selection due to his remarkable play.

We asked Smith how he thought his season played out: “My junior year went very well. I feel like it was my best season so far and me and my team can only get better from here.”

cp1swcrwcae_2wmIt certainly was a banner year for Smith and his high school. His squad made it to its first-ever state semifinal, and he had five interceptions on the year while giving up no touchdowns. His play this year and last spring at several camps has caught the eye of multiple Power 5 programs.

“I’ve heard from lots of schools … Auburn, USC, UGA, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Nebraska, etc.,” Smith said.

Even with colleges steadfastly recruiting Smith, he still believes there is room for improvement. “I feel as if sometimes I didn’t capitalize on as many big plays as I could. Although, I still had a solid season.”

This offseason, Smith said he will be focusing on his technique, playing all types of coverages and getting stronger and bigger. He is expected to be playing in the Rising Seniors game, where some of the best 2018 talent will be showcased.

Smith has visited UGA, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Wake Forest, North Carolina, NC State and Auburn during the fall this year, so expect those Power 5 schools to play a factor in his recruitment; however, he is still wide open at this point.

Heading into the offseason, Smith will be one of the more coveted cornerbacks for the Class of 2018. He has excellent ball skills to play the pass but also uses his long arms to get off blocks, and the junior is an excellent open-field tackler too.
