Shelton Planning A Big Season

Jalyn Shelton is our most recent winner of the Recruit Georgia Play of the Day. The All State honorable mention back displayed an outstanding combination of power and balance on the winning play. Determined to reach the endzone, Shelton spun off one defender after another, all while tight-roping down the sideline for an incredible touchdown run.

We caught up with the class of 18 running back to hear about how his offseason is going and what his plans are for the upcoming season. “My biggest goal for next season is to rush for 2000 yards or more,” Shelton said.

Shelton ran for 1300 yards last season and has an incredible blend of balance and vision. He makes tremendous cuts routinely breaking defenders ankles, and is just a natural runner. He has excellent size at 5’11” 205 pounds and plenty explosiveness in his game (currently power cleans around 300 pounds).

Shelton tailors his game after current Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd and believes his skill set can help out colleges in the future. “My favorite position is running back but I also enjoy playing quarterback.” Shelton continued, speaking about his strengths, “I believe that my vision or ability to cut are my best strengths.”

Watch the young back on film, and you’ll see him throw the pigskin more than you would expect. One play routinely called by the Ridgeland coaching staff is when Shelton receives a toss sweep with a passing option.

Shelton has a strong arm for sure, and does a good job of throwing under pressure, but do not expect him playing QB full time. With class of 19 quarterback Tanner Hill on the roster, and more experienced, Shelton will be toting the rock more than ever.

One area of improvement that the balanced back has pin-pointed on improving this offseason is his speed. He said that is an area that he would like to  improve the most. If he can, then reaching his lofty goal of 2000 yards will become much more attainable.

According to Shelton no schools have really talked to him yet. He has plans to visit a few schools after the dead period but nothing is set in stone. “My coach has plans for me and some other teammates on going to camps.”

Shelton has visited Georgia Tech, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Samford, Louisville and Tennessee during the offseason – most recently visiting Georgia on June 9th with his teammate Markeith Montgomery. We expect more schools to come into focus and start recruiting him very soon because Shelton has all the makings of an FBS running back.
