Recruiting Recap 8/17

Welcome to another edition of the Recruiting Recap! Thanks for stopping by, and for those who are new, this is a feature that covers all of the offers and commitments that happened over the weekend, including Friday, to go along with our sleeper of the day too.

I hope everyone is doing well! We should be unveiling some new team pages tonight, so stay tuned to that! We also will be posting some senior profiles and have a story upcoming on a promising junior OL from Valdosta.

Outside of that, we are just a few weeks away from the start of the season. Some counties have dropped back further into the fall, which has certain created some havoc to do a more complete team ranking for each classification, so I’m just going to hold off until a few days before the season so I can get a comprehensive list, but it might just be impossible to rank this year with all of the differing schedules.

Covid case trends are currently going down, which is great to see! Everyone continue to do their part, and let’s flatten the curve! – David

Bryson Moss
2021 Newnan
Eastern Michigan

Scoop: The tough hard-nosed running back has good acceleration, he sees the field really. One thing about Moss is that he is a grinder, and a proven back in the state with several 1k yard seasons under his belt. EMU lands one of the best uncommitted backs still in the state here.

Jayson Gilliom
2021 North Gwinnett
Furman

Scoop: Gilliom had some good hype this summer after a few standout performances at camps. He is built like a college defensive back right now. He is now over at North Gwinnett, and is set to have a big season. Huge pick-up for Furman here, I think most scouts including myself had Gilliom going FBS, and the Paladins might have to fight off some suitors still this fall.

Emon Hill
2021 Mill Creek
Kent State

Scoop: Hill has always been a technician who has played on varsity throughout high school. Originally starting out at Pace Acd., Hill ended up at Mill Creek and had an impressive junior year. He has great footwork and nice acceleration. Hill had a long list of offers, but the Golden Flashes made a strong push here late in the summer.

Sirad Bryant
2021 Crisp Co.
Georgia Tech

Scoop: Bryant is one of the more talented defenders here in the state of Georgia with a ton of versatility and size. His recruitment took a nice jump around March-April and had a good list of offers to choose from, but it was Georgia Tech, who offered all the way back in October 2019 that will land his services. The 6’1″ 193 lbs. safety should continue to add weight and be a versatile defender at the next level. Has some great upside defending against spread offenses.

Marcus Bleazard
2021 Harrison
Navy

Scoop: Bleazard was a tackling-machine last year with over 150 on the year for the 6-A champions. He has a motor for sure, making tackles all over the field. The high IQ linebacker sees the field really well, taking direct pursuit angles and at 6′ and over 223 lbs. he can pack a punch when meeting the ball carrier in the gaps. Bleazard is a great student with a 4.0 GPA – he should excel as a Midshipmen.

Jaquez Smith
2021 Westlake
Indiana

Scoop: Smith has been a standout since his freshman year. The versatile athlete can really play all over the field, but we like his upside the most at WR. Smith is a smooth athlete with some eye-popping film. Last year, McEachern had a crowded wide receiver corps, and that really won’t be any different this fall at Westlake either. I really like this pick-up for the Hoosiers, Smith is one of the versatile players in the state of Georgia.

Michael Maginnis III
2021 Newnan
Samford

Scoop: Maginnins has a cannon attached to his arm and can spread the football all over the field. He was solid as a junior, and Newnan was in the thick of things all of 2019. Maginnis’ arm talent earned him some FBS offers, but in the air raid offense over at Samford should fit his skill-set perfectly. He has some of the best upside of any QB in this class, and a great student to boot.

Tyler Pugh
2021 Grayson
UT-Martin

Scoop: Pugh is an instinctive defensive tack with very good reactions. He is aggressive and does an excellent job of setting up his tackles. Pugh’s ability to defend against the run is validated on film, and has the flexibility to play a number of defensive back positions at the next level. There is some solid potential that he plays some CB this fall after playing a nickle role mostly for Grayson last year, so UT-Martin fans will get to see him more in pass coverage before he lands on campus.

Sleeper of the Day

Sylvester Bassey
2021 Armuchee

Bassey is an explosive tackler – that stands our right away. On offense he does a nice job with his routes too. Sophomore year, he showed a nice looking running stride and good body control going up for catches. We definitely like his upside at SS at the next level. Following up on Bassey during his junior year, and the 2021 recruit is a legit homerun threat against Class A secondaries. He adjust to the pass pretty well. Needs to be a little more elusive with the ball after the catch, and not just try to rely on his speed all of the time. After watching both his soph and junior film, it really does seem like Bassey has better instincts on the defensive side of the ball. Really like how quickly he gets into the backfield. Bassey is a legit sleeper in this class. He is explosive and can cover some serious space. Bassey is now up to 192 going into his senior year, and is set for a big season, should be on a lot of D1 school’s radar plus he has a 3.8 GPA too.
