Lockett has been considered to be one of the top RB’s in the class dating back to his freshman year at BT Washington, and it was honestly a bit surprising to see such little college interest during the fall of 2020. He has run over 1000 yards each year of HS so far. There is no doubt that Lockett is one of the better power backs in the state of Georgia, and what he does differently than most RB’s with his size and power is that he is able to jump cut in and out of running lanes. That can open things up, but also get Lockett stuck trying to do too much at the same time. He’s very good at working back inside against the grain. Sometimes though it does look like he is more focused on making as many defenders miss as possible, instead of getting up field, and he does occasionally end up working backwards. Lockett will need to learn to take the easier path, and sometimes that means just nominal positive yardage, but his strong lower body should be able to push the pile. The truth is that Lockett was one of those athletes who grew early, and was already the size of a SR even back as a freshman at 5’11” and 200 lbs. He has not increased his top end speed, but still a tough guy to tackle. Very interested in this newer LB/DB type of film. Lockett’s strength makes for an effective open field tackler despite not always lining up his attempts too well. He gets low with his pads and is explosive. The more we watch Lockett, the bigger realization that the wide-framed athlete might just be a better fit at MLB at the next level. He just doesn’t explode up field fast enough, but his immense power is still a difference-maker, and we don’t expect that to change much – plus he is tough as nails and craves contact.
