Welch was one of the top two-way players in 2A playing on both sides of the football. He rushed for 1200 yards and also had nearly 40 tackles on defense. The speedy Athens Academy athlete continues their great track program tradition and has posted a 10.7 100m this spring. Welch does a nice job of squaring up his pads, getting vertical with his running, and exploding upfield. On top of good acceleration, Welch strides out and hits another gear separating from the pursuit. He has legit speed. His direct running style reflects how he plays on the defensive side of the football, and he takes good pursuit angles. His excellent speed closes the gap quickly. He is on the ball carrier before they can make a proper cut, so he is able to clean up a lot of tackles despite being undersized. Given his good speed and determination as a runner, it seems like Welch should attract triple options teams as a slot back. He is a solid tackler, and that should translate over well to perimeter blocking, a prerequisite skill for any option offense.
