I don’t think there has been a 2020 recruit who made a bigger jump in the weight room over the last year or so. Mathis was not very strong up top or in the hips, but now he has added about 80 lbs of strength at both lifts. No doubt, the 2020 recruit loves to hit. He is quick out his stance. Hand placement is pretty good and he does a nice job of driving his legs through the block, but would like to see him get more on his toes. Very good moving athlete, shows light feet moving laterally, which makes sense for him to line up at LT. Mathis is going to have to play OG at the next level. He is 235 right now, but I’m not too concerned about him adding weight. Sure, his lifts are really good, so it’s really just adding bulk to his frame at this point. Mathis has solid film against quality 2-A competition. Took it to a pass-rush specialist that ended up at USF. Mathis needs to be quicker coming out his stance, but he could be a solid option OL.
