Matthews had around 400 yards rushing on just 33 carries last year, which on the surface would grab any college coach’s attention. The 6′ 175 pound athlete does not have sub-4.4 speed as he advertises, but he does show an explosive first step and the ability to mash on the gas blowing by defenders. His frame is more receiver like, which explains why he filled out the form as a receiver. In Griffin’s offense next year we see him splitting out more and becoming a massive part of their screen passing game, which is a key component to their offense. Matthews is an above average athlete for sure, he is a quick accelerator and shows above average balance to break tackles. He needs to get stronger in the hips, work on his route running and general agility.
