Whitefield Academy’s Ian Kelly is off to an impressive start this season with 444 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns, plus a game at QB, giving the senior 646 all-purpose yards. Last week, the sure-handed two-sport star showed off his basketball dexterity in what will surely go down as one of the best plays of the 2026 season.
Whitefield Academy lobbed the football on a back corner fade route where the Athens Academy defender was glued to Kelly, but the only thing sticking on this play was the football to Ian Kelly single right extended hand, reaching out to the autumnal sky. Kelly’s incredible catch earned him a spot on Sunday night’s top 10 plays of the week, and 24 hours later, he was voted the #2 play of the week.
“I would describe my attitude halfway through my senior season as hungry for more. Individually, I feel that now, being back healthy, the best is yet to come in terms of production and playmaking. For my team, I feel that we are very hungry to turn our season around and learn from some tough losses we have had and improve from them as we know we have not played our best football yet,” Kelly said.
The senior’s output has well exceeded last year’s total of 138 receiving yards and has become a focal point of the offense. The senior talked about the improvement he has made over the last year that has led to the drastically improved production.
“Since last season, I have improved most in my speed, high-pointing ability, and focus. This has been a reflection of the work I have put in with my coaches and the focus and intentionality we practice with every day, as well as hitting the weight room harder,” he said.
The 6′ Kelly is now up to 185 lbs., and that explosive element has turned the SR into a difference-maker for Whitefield Academy. No doubt about it, Kelly is becoming an emerging prospect in the class of ’27. So far, the schools that have reached out are Cornell, Navy, Berry, Army, and Hampden-Sydney. The high academic programs’ attention tracks; Kelly has a 4.06 GPA and is clearly someone who takes academics seriously.
“I plan to go up to Cornell, Hampden-Sydney, and Berry for gameday visits soon this fall,” Kelly said.
For the 2nd half of the regular season, Kelly talked about what he would like to accomplish.
“My goals for the remainder of the season are to finish with 5 straight wins, make a deep playoff run with my teammates, 1100 yards receiving, and 15 receiving touchdowns,” he said.
The impending winning streak starts this Friday against Landmark Christian, where Whitefield Academy is a 23-point favorite. The matchup will kick off region play, where it looks like Whitefield Academy is well-positioned to compete for a region title and make a push deep into the playoffs.
An All-State consideration becomes more realized each week, and with so much football left, endless opportunities are available for Kelly, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia to hear the latest on the breakout senior receiver.
