Early College Interest for Starkey

Hapeville Charter’s rising senior wide receiver Rory (RJ) Starkey was the most recent winner of our Sunday Night Highlight Top Play. The smooth operating wide receiver won the vote with his amazing one-handed snag in the corner of the end zone with a defender all over him.

Starkey had a great season last year as the top target for the Hapeville squad that reached the semifinals in Class AA. His efforts earned him first-team All-State by the Georgia Sports Writers Association, but the 2018 recruit is still hungry to improve and has a number of goals for this offseason.

“This offseason I want to work on my speed and strength so I am doing speed and agility work and weight training. Also, I want to perfect my craft at receiver so I am doing a lot of skill specific training as well. I plan on picking up some more offers and making a name for myself,” Starkey said.

Starkey already has one FBS offer at this point from the University of Illinois. He plans to camp at the Rivals Series, Nike Opening and Under Armour All-American during the spring. These camps will prove to be valuable opportunities to compete against the best talent in the Southeast and could earn him more college recognition in the process.

Currently, the colleges contacting Starkey the most have been Illinois, NC State, Wake Forest, Harvard, Yale, East Carolina and Georgia State. We expect even more elite institutions to jump in soon when you consider the rising senior’s academics. Starkey boasts an excellent 3.8 GPA in the classroom and a 27 ACT score, making him an ideal student-athlete.

Starkey is a long strider at wide receiver who can create some serious separation on the deep passes. At 6’1″ and 195 pounds, Starkey shows a good burst with the ball in his hands and gets upfield in a hurry. He tracks the pass really well mid-flight and uses his body to shield the defensive back away from the ball.

When asked about his biggest strengths, Starkey replied, “I believe my biggest strengths on the field are my fearlessness and catching ability.”

In the next few weeks, Starkey will travel to NC State, South Carolina and East Carolina for unofficial visits.
