Chris Bacon – Primed for a Breakthrough Season

When we first saw Chris Bacon at the NUC 5-Star Showcase in April, he was ripping the ball from 4-star wideout, and Tennessee Vol commit,  TaDarryl Marshall. That is quite the first impression for a virtually unknown player entering his junior year at New Manchester High.

The 6’0″, 170-pound free safety messaged us via Twitter in April with a humble message: “I wasn’t what my varsity coaches were looking for last year. But this year I’m sure to have a Breakout season STARTING.”

Bacon has put in the time this offseason to bring his goals to fruition. He visited camps this summer at Cincinnati, South Carolina, Kentucky and West Virginia. We checked in with him yesterday to ask how he has been progressing.

“My offseason was great, I feel like I spent a lot of time in the weight room and on the field,” Bacon said. “I really worked hard and (will) make some big things happen this year.”

His latest scrimmage film, aptly titled “It’s Only the Beginning,” showcases many attributes that you want from a free safety. Bacon is not afraid of contact, is an effective tackler and looks to have a nose for the pigskin (as his last name suggests).

When asked which schools were showing preliminary interest in the underclassman, Bacon mentioned South Carolina.

“South Carolina seemed to show some interest and (they were) eager to see what talent I can bring to the table. I will consider any school that will give me an opportunity to display my talents at the collegiate level.”

Looking toward the future, Bacon plans on “making sure my grades are good, and becoming a leader both on and off the field.”

“I would like to lead my region in interceptions and help my team win,” he said about his goals for the upcoming season. “With all the work I’ve put in this summer, I hope to showcase it on the field.”

First impressions tend to quickly fade from memory. It will be intriguing to see how this season (in addition to the next two) will unfold for the talented free safety from Douglasville.
