Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s Cameron Matthews has been terrific this season, grabbing 29 receptions for 505 yards and four touchdowns, along with 163 rushing yards on the ground and 9 tackles on the defense. The 6’0″, 175-lb. receiver has been a consistent threat for ELCA past the midway point of the season, regularly making electric plays, and that was never more true than Week 8’s matchup against Whitefield.
ELCA was inside their own 20 and had Matthew lined up in the slot. He released upfield, hitting the seam, where Matthews caught the pass in stride, dodging one defensive back, then another, and before you know it, speedy senior had burned the pursuit for an 82-yard score.
“I feel like my season has been going pretty well so far, but I know I still have a lot more to prove,” Matthews said.
The big play earned him a spot in the top 10 plays of the week, and on Monday night, Matthews was voted the #2 play in Georgia. For the senior, these kinds of plays stem back to the offseason, where Matthews put in a lot of work.
“I feel like I’ve improved the most in my speed, making plays after the catch, and being more versatile and playing whatever position my coach needs me to in order to win,” he explained.
As ELCA gears up for a postseason push, Matthews has his sights set high for both team and individual accolades. “My main goal for the rest of the season is to help my team win a state championship and get 1st-Team All-Region or Region MVP.”
On the recruiting front, the recruiting interest, especially from strong-academic programs, has been growing as of late. Matthews did a great job of networking with these programs during last offseason, and that’s paying dividends this fall.
“Right now, I’ve been hearing from schools like Dartmouth, Brown, and Yale,” Matthews noted, adding that while he doesn’t have any confirmed fall visits planned just yet, he is staying patient with the process.
With a 3.8 GPA, the versatile athlete combines Ivy League academics with an explosive playstyle that can shift the momentum of a game. That combo earned Matthews an offer from Brown back on May 12, but with more big plays on the horizon, we are sure more recruiting news is just around the corner, be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear more on ELCA’s dynamic senior and players from all across the state.
