Starr’s Mill rising senior tight end Josh Phifer has seen a boost to his recruitment since the start of the offseason. The two times All-County and All-Region selection provided us with the latest news surrounding his recruitment.
Who all has offered you?
“Mercer and Columbia have offered me so far.”
Where have you visited? Do you have more visits planned soon?
“I’ve visited Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Boston College and Mercer. I’m visiting Columbia and UPenn this weekend.”
Goals for spring practice?
“Get in front of more college coaches before the camps this summer.”
Are you camping this summer?
“I’m going to many camps this summer. Mercer, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Dartmouth, UPenn, Yale, Columbia, and the Shawn Elliot Showcase at Georgia State.”
When would you like to make a decision?
“I plan to make a decision on where I would like to go to college sometime before or during my senior season.”
The Scoop
At 6’5″ and 220 lbs., Phifer certainly poses the size to play tight end at the D1 level. Playing on a run-heavy team, the rising senior made the most of his opportunities being a redzone target. He hauled in a handful of touchdowns last season. Phifer does a really good job of getting full extension into his catch while also making good adjustments midflight. He is a solid run blocker off the edge, and we like the urgency he shows. He has a nice wide stance and gets good leg drive into the block.
Phifer has plenty of room to grow and continue to fill out, we fully expect him to be over 250 lbs. at the next level. He looks like a solid run-blocking tight end with above-average hands and reactions. We are impressed with his determination when running after the catch in the several clips shown in his junior film. Phifer is also an excellent student with a 4.0 GPA and is a 3-year starter on the varsity. He’s been getting stronger this offseason power cleaning 275 recently. There is a lot to like about the rising senior and we expect the coming months more recruiting options will open up.
