The West Forsyth Wolverines have a true mauler anchoring their offensive line in junior Dylan Matrale. At 6’3″ and 295 lbs, the blocker boasts a wide frame and a punishing style of play.
Matrale plays with such maturity and physical dominance that you would look for a seasoned varsity starter. With that experience and on-field leadership has earned the junior captain honors, which is a rare distinction for a non-senior.
His blocking prowess was on full display in a Week 6 matchup against West Forsyth, where Matrale was mauling defenders and burying them into the turf, helping his team to a huge OT win against North Forsyth. The junior earned a spot on the Week 6 Bully Squad, ultimately taking home OL of the Week honors on the site.
Matrale is incredibly physical at the point of attack, getting better each week at finishing his blocks. He just continuously drives his legs through each block, relentless on each play. The numbers back up the film, as the standout lineman noted he is currently “averaging an 87% blocking grade and has 25 pancakes” on the season.
“I’d describe halfway through my junior year as a really good learning and growth experience,” Matrale said. “I feel like I’ve gotten a lot more confident and consistent, especially playing left tackle this year.”
While he projects well as an inside offensive lineman at the next level, Matrale is showing his versatility, especially as a pass blocker at West Forsyth, a testament to his overall skill level.
“I think I’ve improved the most in my pass protection and footwork,” he explained. “I’ve been working hard on being more consistent with my technique and staying balanced.”
His physical traits are impressive, but his approach to the game is what truly sets the tone for the West Forsyth offense.
“My mindset on the field is to be physical, play with an edge, and do whatever I can to help my team win. I try to bring energy every play and never take a snap off,” he said.
For the rest of the fall, his focus is centered strictly on team success and consistency. “My goals are to keep improving every week, help our team win, finish the season strong, and continue putting good film together.”
Despite being 2-4, West Forsyth’s win last week puts them 1-0 in region play. They have a BYE this week and then will face off against Lambert, which will have a massive impact on the region rankings, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia to hear the latest on Matrale, how West Forsyth’s season continues to evolve, and much more high school football across the state.
