Wells is the OL of the Week

Carrollton’s MaTeo Wells has been impressive blocking during the first part of the season. We have followed the SR for a long time, and each year, Wells adds a little more to his game that gives him an edge.

Just last week, the Carrollton starter had perhaps his best game ever blocking. Going up against Gainesville, who has multiple P4 defenders, Wells was tenacious, getting his hands inside the pads and driving high-level guys into the turf.

The outstanding effort earned him a spot on the Bully Squad for Week 5, and on Wednesday, he was voted the top OL of the Week.

“Sr has been great so far. There have been many ups and downs with the team, but we have battled through it and continue with the 1-0 mindset every week,” Wells said.

The 5’11” blocker is technically sound in the trenches, which has earned him varsity reps as a sophomore and a major role junior year. For his senior year, Wells has taken an athletic leap forward, providing more impactful blocks.

“A difference from last year to now is my run game. I’ve become drastically better. I put on 25 lbs this offseason, gaining muscle. Jared Southers and Trenchmob have emphasized outside zone and inside zone this offseason,” he said.

Carrollton is among the best teams in the state of Georgia, and our #3 team in the 6A rankings. They are a strong candidate to be in the 6A title, which Wells envisions much the same.

“My team goals are to win a region and state championships and put the best version of ourselves out there. My personal goals are 1st team All-Region & All-State,” he said.

On the recruiting front, Wells has been committed to Anderson College since June 22nd. He talked about his relationship with the program and how they secured his pledge.

“Anderson has a great plan for me. I feel they will put me in the best position to be a better Christian, man, and football player. They’ve shown the most love during this recruiting process as well,” he said.

They are getting a tough blocking offensive lineman with strong fundamentals and the versatility to play either offensive guard or center at the next level. Plus, the senior’s mindset on the field is imposing.

“When I go out every Friday, the goal for me is to dominate and insert my dominance. The play of the O-line will dictate how the game will go offensively. I love being out there with my teammates and will block my butt off every play.”

At the beginning of the season, we speculated that Carrollton had the best offensive line in the state of Georgia, and there is no doubt that Wells is a major reason. He doesn’t have P4 size, but you cannot argue with the film and production he shows against high-level talent, and that kind of physicality will be huge come playoff time.
