The 2025 season has been a breakout campaign for Screven County junior Drayden Roberts. The explosive playmaker is making an impact in all three phases of the game, helping his team to their best start in years, and playing his best football yet.
“My JR has been going well so far, my team is 6-0 and has had a big turnaround from last season. I have 309 all-purpose yards leading Division A D2 in punt return yards, I have 3 pass breakups on the season and 16 tackles on the season, 10 receptions for 102 yards,” he said.
Roberts’ special teams prowess has been his calling card for the 2025 season thus far, and last week against Bryan County was no different. He took a missed field goal that came up short before the goalline, and returned it the full length of the field for one of the longest touchdowns from Week 8.
The play was voted the #1 play of the week on the website, and it really illustrated the full scope of Roberts’ athleticism in the open field. He made several guys miss, then reversed to the other side, where his top-end speed outran the Class A team’s coverage.
With an electric return like that, it’s clear that Roberts has been working hard at his craft over the last year.
“I’ve improved the most on my man coverage, tackling, and trying to get better every day and develop a better mentality,” he said.
When he’s not returning kicks, Roberts lines up at defensive back and slot receiver for Screven County. At around 5’9″ and 165 lbs., Roberts shows good explosiveness, even finishing off tackles with physicality and showing the top-end speed to get around the corner of the defense on jet sweeps.
“What separates me from the class is my IQ and my mentality when I step on the field. Trying to dominate everyone opposing me,” he said.
Roberts’ mentality on the field, along with his dynamic scoring ability at special teams, should start to attract college programs far and near.
“Recruiting is going decently, I have no offers, but I know that god has plans and my time will come. I haven’t taken any visits, and I hope I get the chance too,” he said.
Roberts’ dynamic versatility should prove to be an advantage for Screven County down the stretch. Screven County has a lot of explosive football players to key on, so Roberts could see a greater impact on offense down the stretch, especially with his speed out to the sideline.
With an undefeated record so far, Screven County is one of the surprise teams in Class A DII, and the emergence of playmakers like Roberts is one major reason why. They should figure to be a player down the stretch, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear more about the JR athlete and players across the state of Georgia throughout the remainder of the 2025 season.
