Sleeper of the Day

Chris Winfree
2025 Bryan Co.
Linebacker

Going into the 2024 season, no other player on Bryan County had bigger expectations than Chris Winfree. After making it to the state semifinals in 2023, and graduating many seniors, the defensive responsibilities fell square on the shoulders of the All-State honorable mention linebacker. One aspect that stands out is his hustle after the football. Although his pursuit angles are myopic, Winfree makes up for that with an incredible motor. Winfree is a solid tackler in space. He’s grown almost another inch since his junior year and stands around 6’3-4″ and 195 lbs. Although he hasn’t uploaded the senior highlight reel yet, the McIntosh Co. Academy from earlier this month gives you great insight into the raw potential of Winfree playing off the edge. He has good length, and as he continues to sharpen his fundamentals, Winfree could become good at setting the edge and creating havoc. He has all of the qualities to be an FBS-caliber OLB. Winfree has the frame and is just starting to scratch the surface of his weight room potential. The film shows an athletic profile; just see how he moves, you aren’t finding many guys with his length, speed, and hustle after the football still uncommitted in this recruiting class.

Three ‘n Out

Grayson’s star linebacker was at Ohio State over the weekend. This is shortly off the heels of Atkinson’s visit to Georgia, and it does appear that the top programs in the country are in heavy pursuit of the state’s top linebacker. Atkinson’s Grayson took down Norcross in the 2nd round and will face off against Collins Hill, a rematch from earlier this season where the Rams suffered their only loss of the season 20-19.

Chattahoochee’s DJ Avery put himself in rare air among the state’s all-time receivers. The senior became the 29th player with over 3k career receiving yards finishing his career with 3084 yards. Avery also ranks among the leading receivers with 33 career touchdowns. He finished the season with 1259 yards and was the most dangerous receiving threat in all of 5A. Avery, who we picked to be All-State as a junior, will certainly be vying again here in 2024. The talented senior committed to Georgia State back on October 9th and will look to carry on the tradition of explosive wideouts in downtown Atlanta.

In my opinion, the biggest win of the 2nd Round was Stephens County beating Callaway 35-33. Going into the matchup, Callaway looked ready for another 2A state title run, but Stephens County’s big win puts the program into the quarterfinals. One athlete who continues to make electric plays is senior Jonah Swinton. There is a lot of buzz surrounding Swinton up in NE Georgia, and during last Friday’s game, Swinton had a max speed of 21.9 MPH. The angular Swinton has a smooth release and once he hits top speed, which is rather quick, the senior glides downfield. Swinton is explosive coming out of his breaks. Callaway’s top DB locked up 2A’s top receiver Jaylen Elder recently, but Swinton had him on skates, leaving him in the dust on comebacks where he was completely unbothered and out of the area code. With offers from Point and LaGrange, the 6′ 160 lbs. receiver appears to be a major sleeper in this recruiting class.
