Varner is a massive looking receiver target who is really just scratching the surface of his game. The 2019 TE/WR prospect is just big, and when your going up against players 7-10 inches shorter he can just swallow up the football without them really being able to do much. He’s a pretty decent athlete though, nice fluid looking running stride, not as stiff as other tall players we have seen emerged this season. This seems to be the biggest year we have seen with hoop players moving over to hoops, but it’s going to make for an interesting recruiting finish for a lot of schools. I think Varner has a lot of potential, but looks like he needs work on playing the football. He could do so much more using his frame, and try to time his jump, but right now there is a lot of flat footed catches. Not a huge problem when your 6’6″-6’7″. He needs to be more patient as a runner too, doesn’t use his blocks well yet, but you got to like his upside and hands. Made one catch off a slant where he reached back and fluidly turned up field for more yardage. How much weight can he seriously gain is the question. I think a RS is a no question, but he could easily add enough to be +220 by 21-22 years old.
