One of the leading receivers in 4A to start off the 2024 season is Clayton Coppock. The three-year starter out of Mays has a long-running stride; after the catch, he is very dangerous in the open field. Coppock accelerates quickly and looks fast in pads. He is a fluid athlete, showing excellent ball skills and body control to catch the contested pass, and he continues to keep his feet to prolong the huge play. Coppock is smoothing coming out of his breaks. Great acceleration helps with his release. An underrated part of his game is reading blocks, which is effective as a returner, but you can see on tunnel screens Coppock slips through small areas and utilizes his blocks exceptionally well. He’s a creative runner, spins out of tackles, and the great body control results in breaking a % of tackle attempts. Coppock’s route running lacks variety, but considering his quickly he comes out of his breaks, we feel like Coppock should continue to harness. Coppock reminds me of Dayton Wade out of Lovejoy from 4-5 years ago, who was equally slept on despite having an All-State SR year. He’s now a rookie on the Ravens.
