Newby is a solid defensive tackle recruit with above average energy. He is pretty quick, which is good for a 6′ 270 lbs. lineman. Newby had a very good junior season at Jackson. His quickness off the line to go along with the overall effort he puts into each play has an impact. The 2021 lineman even blocked a few kicks last fall. His hustle is a big part of his game for sure. He keeps a pretty flat back while engaged and shows pretty quick hips too. Gets a very good initial push too. If he was a tad bigger then FBS programs would not give a 2nd thought, but lack of height will put some question marks on his recruiting prospects among those programs. Still, I think that Newby has a place and should get good D1 interest throughout his recruitment. Newby has strong hands – the next step now is making them even quicker so that he gets off blocks and gets into the backfield even quicker. Tackling is pretty good but at time he is gets way too high, and doesn’t always drive his legs through contact.
