North Cobb is among the best teams in the state, and the emergence of electric skill players like Micah Billingsley provides a lot of optimism as we enter region play. The 5’11” 175 lbs. sophomore receiver is elusive, escaping out of tackles with elite balance, and has the acceleration to beat the pursuit down the sideline, much like he did last week’s win against Walton.
His touchdown against the Raiders was voted the #3 play of the week and was even featured on Thursday’s GHSF Daily Play of the Day. So far, it’s been a solid season for Billingsley, catching 10 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
“It’s going good. I just need more opportunities to get the ball but whenever I do get the ball; I need to make a play,” he said.
North Cobb is never short on talent, so vying for targets among a talented group can be a battle for emerging sophomores. Still, with an 18-yard per-catch average, and a touchdown scored on every five receptions, Billingsley appears to be money.
The sophomore believes his yards after the catch are his biggest improvement since last season. Watch further into his Week 6 highlight reel, and you’ll quickly realize he potentially had a better play on another touchdown vs Walton. Billingsley made a contested touchdown catch where he secured the ball despite losing his helmet, which the sophomore showed incredible focus, body control, and hand strength to hold onto the pass.
If he continues to make plays like this, Billingsley is sure to grab the attention of college evaluators soon, but as of now, he said that no one has reached out, yet. The fact of the matter is if you make great plays as a sophomore, then more will happen later on during high school. We like to call it the rule of the #RGTop10, which now had regular winners who are now NFL players, such as Eric Stokes and Ladd McConkey.
Colleges will need to start paying closer attention soon. Sure, a 5’11” 175 lbs. sophomore with less than 200 yards receiving doesn’t exactly sound the recruiting alarm bells, so colleges won’t urgently recruit, but by season’s end, the North Cobb sophomore should have solid college interest.
