Senior running back Cayden Newson might be under the radar for now, but at 6′ and 200 lbs., he has the big-play ability desired by D1 programs. In Week 1 against Druid Hills, Newson rushed for 150 yards, averaging 8.3 yards per carry and also scoring once.
The sole touchdown is the origin of this story, and why we are covering the senior. His 31-yard run against Druid Hills was among the best plays of Week 1.
Newson took a handoff up the middle and was immediately surrounded; first running into a defensive tackle, who grabbed Newson by the waist and attempted to wrestle him down. The senior spun out of the big defender, shrugging him off like a defensive back, then reversed field where he was met once again by two more Druid Hills defenders. Newson laid the boom, then bounced away and ran the final 30 yards down the sideline, falling into the end zone for a score.
The play was voted the #2 play of the week on the site and showcases the upside of an athlete like Newson. That said, senior year has been a turnover of sorts. Newson transferred over from Salem and has moved from linebacker to running back.
“The start of my senior year was kind of tough, switching positions from linebacker to running back,” he candidly replied.
Newson is basically an unknown for most. He doesn’t have any Hudl film, let alone a profile yet for Miller Grove. His old profile for Salem shows varsity action for the football and basketball teams over the last few seasons.
Regardless, Newson’s powerful run style should balance the offensive attack and make Miller Grove a very dangerous team to stop.
“My goals for this year are to maintain steady production and get 10-15 touchdowns this season. Also, I’ve improved my strength and speed,” Newson confirmed.
A few FBS programs have shown interest so far, but some additional film will be necessary. Regardless, you don’t see runs like this often, and that will attract FBS programs, especially when you have good size.
Newson believes his work ethic can separate him from the rest.
“At the next level, I’m going to outwork everyone on the field, do the little things that matter, and move any and every boundary that’s in front of me,” he said.
If the senior keeps this current pace, his recruitment will continue to rise, and so will Miller Grove’s chances to make a deep push into the playoffs. We selected them to be our ‘underdog’ program in 2A this year and believe seniors like Newson and others will make a big difference throughout the year.
