North Atlanta is off to their best start in school history with a 6-0 record. The program has been outscoring opponents 260-69 this season, and one of the emerging players has been senior Darius Malcolm Jr.
The electrifying two-way player has been making an impact on both sides of the football. On defense, he has 3 interceptions, 2 of which Malcolm has returned for a score on top of 12 tackles and 5 pass break-ups. On offense, the senior has 5 total touchdowns and has even returned 2 kickoffs for a score too. Remarkably, the athlete has entered the endzone 9 times and almost half of his scores weren’t on offense.
“My senior year has been amazing so far my team is 6-0 and I’m achieving all my goals. For the rest of the season, I’d like to go 10-0 as a team and make All-State and win All-Region MVP,” Malcolm said.
The speedy athlete attributes his progress to one key area from this offseason.
“Over the past year, the thing I have improved the most on is definitely overall athleticism, especially speed. I took track very seriously this spring,” Malcolm said.
At 5’10” and 170 lbs., Malcolm has the body type of a speedy skill player, and his film certainly solidifies any queries. His background in track translates over nicely to defensive back, where he is able to use his excellent acceleration to break on the football. We really like how he finishes his tackles out in the flat. On offense, Malcolm is able to get around tacklers utilizing his speed and is an extremely versatile back who can bounce to the outside or square up in between the tackles.
As of now, Malcolm is a sleeper prospect with only recent offers from Samford and Wofford at the end of September, but we feel like the trend is setting in the right direction. College interest is starting to spike for the senior.
“The schools I am hearing from currently are Samford University, Wofford, Austin Peay, Mercer, Reinhardt, West Georgia, Albany State, and Fort Valley,” he said.
One has to imagine that more schools will be joining that group. Malcolm is playing the best football of his career so far, doing so on one of the most competitive teams in 6A. We believe that Malcolm is a prospect to watch closely for the remainder of the 2023 season, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear the latest on senior and players all across the state.
