Luke Snyder: Into the Snyderverse

Class A Division II has become extremely competitive with reclassification, and #1 Irwin County is seemingly the greatest beneficiary thus far. One reason is senior quarterback Luke Snyder, who is executing the offense at a high level and his top-tier athleticism in the classification has proven advantageous.

That level of athleticism was on display last Friday against Clinch County where Snyder broke five tackles in one sequence, even landing on top of a defender before rebalancing and moving back towards the endzone. Simply speaking, the senior was too hard to tackle, and on Sunday night he was named to the top plays of the week. A day later he was voted the #3 play of the week.

“It’s been going very well, we are currently 7-0 and plan on keeping it going. I have thrown for 739 yards with 11 touchdowns on 67 attempts and rushed for 317 yards with 7 touchdowns on 36 carries,” Snyder said.

At 6’3″, Snyder’s athleticism in the open field will dramatically impact Irwin County’s championship prospects. Snyder is almost averaging 10 yards per carry and has shown excellent top-end speed maxing around 21 MPH, which has led to several explosive plays so far.

Over the last year, Snyder has worked on his passing, becoming more patient and confident with his throws.

“I believe I have improved the most in being patient and letting the play develop, also being more confident and on time with throws,” he said.

If last week’s top play didn’t convince you, Snyder is a resilient football player determined to help his team win. His humble mindset on the field provides a big advantage to Irwin County.

“My mindset is to play as hard as I can and control what I can control for the lord,” he said.

On the recruiting front, the senior has not garnered much traction yet. No offers have come in, but he does have some DII interest.

“There is not much recruiting going on, but the main team that has shown some interest is Harding University,” Snyder said.

That’s a solid program that won the DII National Championship in 2023 with a 15-0 record, so a program that identifies winners. Snyder has been exactly that, especially in 2024, and earning his own championship is the main focus.

“My goals for the last bit of the season are to help the team the best I can, and hopefully make it to the championship and win,” Snyder confirmed.

Irwin County has dominated the last 10 years winning eight region championships and two state titles (2019 and 2020). The Indians have already tied last season’s win total with seven, and Snyder’s outstanding play will continue to be a major factor in the coming weeks.

So opposing defense better prepare for the Snyderverse; where tackles disappear and the senior slings the football around the field with great efficiency.
