Jo’Van Freeney Shining Bright

Landmark Christian’s Jo’Van Freeney is Preseason All-State WR for the Private division in the state. The deceptive SR receiver is among the best at breaking down the defender in 1v1 situations, and that was demonstrated exceptionally well last week in a 28-21 victory over Christian Heritage.

Freeney caught a short intermediate pass off the right sideline, where he was sandwiched between two defenders. He took the narrow corridor, immediately juking out the first tackler, who crashed into the player on Freeney’s backside. Now with some space to operate, Freeney cruised by one defender and then went into spin cycle on the next, creating another two-player pile-up on his backside, but again, wide open space in front. The senior cleanly jaunted the final 20 yards into the endzone, providing one of the best highlights of Week 2.

Freeney was voted the #1 play of the week on Monday, which really encapsulates his season thus far, so we asked if he could summarize his thoughts.

“The start of my senior year is going great. On the defensive side, I currently have 1 interception and 1 pass deflection. On the offensive side, I have 12 catches, 205 yards, and 4 touchdowns.” Freeney continued to give credit, “I also want to shout out God, my mother, family, friends, teammates, and school. Everyone played a part in selecting me, and I’m honored to have the support I have.”

Freeney is a dynamic athlete for Landmark Christian and has high expectations going into this season. With his Landmark team now 2-0 to start the season, they appear to be the real underdogs (which we wrote about in our preseason preview) in the Private division in the state of Georgia.

“My goals this season are to compete in the playoffs, and go as far as God wants us to, and to also pick up more offers to play at the next level,” Freeney said.

As of now, Freeney holds a handful of offers, so he provided a quick recruiting update.

“I currently have two offers, one from Shorter University and Southeastern University, but have also heard from different schools as well,” he said.

The recruiting clock is ticking down, but Freeney has plenty more opportunities to make his case before midnight strikes, and given his early-season body of work, we feel like his recruitment will heat up. The senior is a dynamic two-way athlete with a solid 6’1″, 180 lbs. frame. He shows excellent body control when elevating to break up a pass or make a catch. Plus, he displays excellent short-space quickness, which he showcased last week, assertively cutting across the field, leaving defenders lost in the sauce.

Last offseason, Freeney focused on improving his speed, agility, and leadership skills. The final quality, Freeney believes, is a separating factor from other recruits.

“What will separate me at the next level is my leadership mindset, work ethic, ball skills, and ball knowledge,” he said.

No doubt, Freeney has showcased excellent ball skills the last few seasons, making highlight reel-worthy catches on both sides of the football. Those types of plays can be a differentiator in the game’s outcome, and possibly his recruitment, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear the latest on Freeney and athletes across the Peach State.
