Jackson County’s Tyler Smith has been an emerging 2027 prospect this fall. The big 6’4″ 290 lbs. lineman has been blocking well, using his 81″ wingspan to get leverage and drive defenders out of the play.
That was never more true than last Friday’s Region Championship Game against Clarke Central, where Jackson County controlled the line of scrimmage rushing for 355 yards. The standout senior blocker used his big hands to engage and control defenders, using his wide frame to anchor and seal off blocks.
Jackson County beat Clarke Central 33-14, winning the Class 6A Region 8 title. They are undefeated and the #24 team in our GHSA 25 all-classification rankings.
“I would describe my senior season as going extremely well, and I’m very blessed to be in the situation I’m in,” Smith said. “Not everyone gets the opportunity to be undefeated this far into the season, so I’m just super thankful and proud of my team.”
The senior’s blocking grade is at 90% through the 9 games. Smith has been executing at such a high level that some level of All-State recognition is all but certain. The postseason accolades will be warranted. Roll back the film, and you’ll find a senior giving maximum effort.
“My mindset on the field is to be a game changer every snap. If I can do my job at the highest level, I know it will open up so many opportunities for my team, especially in the run game,” he said.
On the recruiting front, Smith is an emerging senior prospect, seeing his recruiting stock dramatically rise in recent weeks. Stony Brook, Cornell, West Georgia, Tennessee Tech, and UT Martin have all sent in formal scholarship offers. The senior talked about the sudden rise in interest.
“Recruiting has been going very well recently, especially in the past 2 weeks, with me picking up 3 more D1 offers. I’m talking with new schools every day – it feels like – so I’m just super excited and giving it up to God to lead me in the right direction,” he said.
Smith has visits planned to Tennessee Tech, UT-Martin, West Georgia, and Georgia Southern over the next few weeks. No doubt, with college recruiting winding down, coupled with a late playoff push, Smith has a lot on his plate, but that’s all part of the process.
“My goals for the rest of the season are first and foremost to win a state championship. After that, I’d say to continue to become more skilled in my craft and grow the culture with my teammates,” he said.
Among the teams in 6A, Jackson County is unanimously a ranked team, but equally underestimated. Last year, they beat Milton in the playoffs, shocking most pundits in the state, and with a strong senior class returning, opportunity’s door is wide open.
