Hickman & Dumas’ Game-Winning Fade

Mary Persons was down to the final seconds last week against Jackson. Down 21-17, there was really just enough time for one last play.

Junior quarterback Logan Hickman was in the shotgun, poised to make the big throw as time expires. Sophomore Ty Dumas was split out to the left, and right at the snap, he ran towards the left side of the endzone. Hickman released the pass and it went high into the October sky before falling down perfectly to Dumas, who acrobatically tapped his foot in bounds for the go-ahead score (WATCH VIDEO).

“We practice that fade route every day at practice and it was crazy to win at the last second. It was the wildest game I’ve ever played in, and we are gonna remember it for a while,” Hickman said.

Dumas followed up, “We practice fade routes every day, and we are working on toe taps when we are in groups. It feels great to win a big game in the last second.”

On the recruiting front, the two Mary Persons student-athletes have yet to really start the recruiting process. Hickman, a junior, has received some interest from Ivy League programs.

“So far I have not been recruited very heavily, but I have been in touch with Penn, Dartmouth, and a few other schools that have shown interest,” Hickman said.

Dumas cannot have college coaches contact him yet since he is in the class of 2024, and it’s really just his first year playing on the varsity.

“I broke my toe and was out almost all last year. I played one game and I scored with the same play,” he said.

The Hickman to Dumas connection looks to really only build from here. The two talented Mary Persons student-athletes have both proven to be very clutch and can execute game-winning plays under the biggest moments.

The victory over Jackson last week was huge and helped the program edge ahead to #3 in the region standings over Jackson. Now they have Sumter coming up this Friday, and then the start of the 2nd season begins the week after with the 3A playoffs.
