Strong Rock Christian is off to a fast 4-1 start this season, and a huge reason for their success has been the impressive senior running back Jake Johnson. Through the first five games, the 5’10”, 180-lb. back has been on an absolute tear, amassing a staggering 910 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground, which currently ranks him third in the state in total rushing yards.
Last Friday, Johnson had a monster performance against Tattnall Square Academy, rushing for 250 yards and four touchdowns, including an explosive 92-yard kickoff. The senior returned a kickoff down the right sideline, and with two Tattnall Square guys bearing down, Johnson’s return seemed certain to end, but the relentless senior shrugged off a tackle, spun back inside, and left both Tattnall Square players in the dust.
“It’s been a great start. We’ve been playing good football as a team, and I’ve been able to make some big plays,” Johnson said.
The senior talked about how he has improved over the last year and made a significant leap forward this fall.
“I feel like I’ve gotten better every week, and I’m playing at a different level than I was last year,” he explained. “I’ve improved a lot overall as a running back. My vision, patience, and ability to make plays in different ways have gotten better.”
With his team rolling, Johnson has high expectations for the remainder of the season.
“Obviously, my biggest goal is to make the playoffs and win a State Championship with my team. Individually, I’d like to finish the year as the #1 RB in GIAA,” he said.
Being the #3 rusher in Georgia is going to catch the attention of scouts no matter where you play. Johnson currently holds offers from St. Norbert College and the Georgia Knights (CCC), and is in regular communication with Sewanee, Brevard, and Reinhardt. He is taking a proactive approach to his recruitment.
“I’m doing what everyone else is doing and sending emails all over the Southeast, trying to find the right fit.”
Johnson added that he has three game-day visits scheduled so far and is working on setting up two more, saying he “can’t wait to see what comes from those visits.”
Johnson is an intense football player; just pull back his film, and you see a guy who hits the hole like his hair is on fire.
