Fleet-footed Fulcher Flies by Defenders

Portal sophomore Gideon Fulcher is an impressive athlete, standing 6’3″ and 190 lbs., experiencing the competitive weeks of the GHSA football season during his young career. The 2028 dual-threat passer has connected on 33 passes for 555 yards and 7 touchdowns while also tallying 107 rushing yards and two additional scores.

A good chunk of those rushing yards occurred last week against ECI. Fulcher took a keeper up the middle on 4th down, found a hole in the blocking, and accelerated through a crowd of players for a 70-yard touchdown run.

The play was voted the #3 play of the week in the state of Georgia and the highlight of his 2025 season thus far.

“My sophomore year has been amazing and definitely a long journey of just learning and trying my best to develop in a new system. It’s honestly been electrifying,” Fulcher said.

The sophomore is currently 2nd in his region in passing yards and first in touchdowns. And while the program is already out of playoff contention, Fulcher is optimistic about the progress being made, especially his passing numbers in a run-heavy system.

“After the loss to ECI, it officially put us out of the playoffs, but my goal to finish the year is to have over 800 passing, over 200 rushing, and maybe an All-Region accolade, especially considering me playing for a major run first team,” he said.

On the recruiting front, Fulcher has been attempting to gain a foothold, but as of now, college interest has not ticked up.

“As of right now, I have no attention from recruiting. I’ve been DMing and emailing, but still no responses. I have not taken any visits yet either,” he said.

Something to keep in mind is that college coaches cannot communicate with underclassmen, so while his efforts show his dedication, there will be minimal direct response at the moment. That said, there is a lot to like on film with Fulcher, especially in a rebuilding year for Portal.

Fulcher is a big-armed passer who can drive the football downfield. The 6’3″ lefty has an effortless throwing motion and had several deep passes where his timing and accuracy are really on point. Fulcher takes his shots downfield and makes defenses pay.

“I believe what separates me from the rest of my class is that I’m a workhorse. Whether it’s the film room, weight room, or the field, I always overwork to get better.” Fulcher continued, “I’m a true, gritty leader. You need a short yardage down, I’m here. For example, it was 4th and 4 on the play that got nominated top play, scoring on a rush in the homecoming game to tie it up. I just work harder and more than everyone else.”

No doubt, the upside for Fulcher is high, and he will get another opportunity to display his talents this Friday against Claxton, who is currently winless. There should be big plays on the horizon for the sophomore, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear the latest on Fulcher and athletes across the state of Georgia.
