SLEEPER OF THE DAY

Niejay Gaston
2022 Booker T. Washington

Gaston has an interesting body composition just by looking at his weight lifting numbers, and it seems like he has a lot of room to grow, especially in the lower body. What stands out about the 2022 recruit is natural running instincts and a long-running gait that eats up yardage. He is a quick accelerator. Absolutely love how he hits top speed right as he is handed the football. Gaston shows urgency. Natural forward lean allows him to break right through arm tackles. Gaston is a really smooth athlete with the ball in his hands. He does an excellent job of picking his way through a hole and does a great job of timing his cuts. Very patient reading his blocks and using them for cutbacks. Makes smart concise cuts at the 2nd level and is good at making defenders miss in 1v1 without losing much speed either. Keeps his legs driving through contact and has a nose for the first down or endzone. Gaston can get the chains moving. Smart runner, especially talented at making plays after the catch. Talk about lying under the radar, Gaston has some of the best natural running instincts of any back in the state still without many offers, and just given more time in the weight room he could really blossom at the D1 level. Gaston needs to work on his lateral quickness and getting more explosive coming out his cuts, but that should really improve has he gets stronger. At the college level he should fillout and be a lot closer to 190 lbs. Gaston is one of the biggest sleepers at RB in this class.
