In Week 5, some of the best catches of the entire GHSA season happened. Marion County’s Camron Crawford joined the acrobatic party with his own special play, a one-handed touchdown catch where the 6’4″ athlete basically eclipsed a Manchester defensive back from having any real impact.
The football was in the air, with only two possible outcomes, and the junior athlete only had one in mind: making the catch. Crawford was named to the top 10 plays of the week, and later on Monday night he was voted #2 play in Georgia.
With 13 tackles, 3 sacks, a few forced fumbles, along with 8 receptions and 120 yards plus two touchdowns, Crawford has been making an impact.
“My junior season is going strong, and I’m starting to see a lot of the things I worked on this offseason pay off.” He continued to go more in depth, “Currently, I’m playing multiple positions on both offense and defense, so it’s been fun being able to do a lot more than I have in the past. Defensively, I may be rushing the passer one play and dropping into coverage the next. Offensively, I’m being used wherever my coach needs me, and he trusts me to make a play when we need one.”
At 6’4″, with good quickness, Crawford has the type of frame that will attract FBS interest. He talked about the offseason and what he focused on to build up his potential: “Physically, I’ve gotten stronger, faster, and added more weight. Compared to last season, my pass rush has improved a lot on defense, while my route running and ball tracking have taken a big step forward on offense.”
Through four games, Marion County has suffered several tough losses, two of which were by a combined 7 points. They’ll face off against Crawford County this Friday, where both teams are looking for their first win of the season. Crawford talked about finding ways to stack victories while keeping his production high.
“For the remainder of the season, my goal is to help my team in any way I can and continue to collect wins, while also racking up more sacks and TFLs on defense. Offensively, I want to continue getting more receptions and finding the end zone more,” he said.
On the recruiting front, Crawford is hearing from Virginia and Kennesaw State. The explosive junior has a visit planned to Virginia on the 23rd, and he’s working out the details to visit Kennesaw in November.
The whole process is just getting started, but Crawford is the type of prospect that will catch evaluators’ attention, especially if he continues to make special plays like he did last week against Manchester.
