Eagle’s Landing AJ Walters is off to an excellent start to his senior season. The quick-footed defensive back has 33 total tackles, 9 pass breakups, and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.
Aforementioned pick-six happened last Friday against ELCA, and was among the top plays from Week 8. Walters adeptly read a pass deep over the middle of the field and picked it off. The senior started to run back, gliding by a receiver where he stepped out of a tackle, then ran down the left sideline where a convoy of blockers sealed off most of the pursuit. To cap of the great return, Walters high-fived a teammate near moments before crossing the endzone.
The play was voted the third best of the week, and it really captures the excellent senior season so far.
“My senior year has been exceptional. I have been enjoying the moments with my brothers on and off the field,” Walter said.
Walter is a multi-year starter and has continued to improve each season. He is breaking up passes at a high clip, and he really attributes those improvements to his work over the offseason.
“My technique is definitely my biggest improvement I would say. I grinded, all spring and summer with the best,” he said.
On the recruiting front, Walters has taken several visits and appears to be keeping his options open at the moment.
“I have taken a list of visits. Davidson, Anderson, Marist, Gardner-Webb, UT Martin, Temple, Tulane, Columbia, and Yale. I do plan on returning to Davidson this fall. Also still open to taking visits to different programs, but my recruitment is still open,” he said.
Walters is the type of player who has made real strides with his fundamentals in the last year. He shows good patience reading and reacting to the receiver, watching the QB’s eyes, and staying in phase with the receiver. His high IQ was instrumental in last week’s top play, and something he prides himself on.
“The things that separate me from others in my class are my mentality and IQ of the game. I always believe I’m the best on the field, but I also know I have things to work on. Then my IQ of the game, by just studying our opponents and the game of football in general, It helps me make certain plays by just being in the proper position and knowing what to expect,” he said.
They say confidence is the most important element when it comes to a defensive back, and Walters certainly manages to talk the talk, but also, his film at the top backs it up. With an excellent GPA of 3.9, we believe that more colleges will jump on board soon with Walters, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear the latest on the SR and athletes across the state of Georgia.
