North Hall’s 2 AM Hail Mary

No game during Week 4 captured the attention and magic of GHSA football than North Hall’s Hail Mary touchdown against East Hall. The game had it all, including several weather delays, a JR QB throwing for 416 yards, and the late-morning magic of a tipped pass touchdown to walk off with a win.

At first, it all seemed impossible. East Hall took the lead with less than a minute left, and North Hall was facing an uphill battle, but a long return by senior Ty Kemp back to the 44-yard line brought a sliver of hope back. A few plays later, and JR QB Alex Schlieman let loose a 27-yard lob into the endzone towards Kemp. Three defenders bracketed Kemp, and while the ball spiraled into the morning sky, the four athletes converged. Kemp kept his focus, and while he did not initially make the high-pointed catch, the ball bounced, and the senior hauled in his 2nd opportunity, ripping the football away from the defense to win the game.

The play was voted the #1 play of the week on the website, and rightfully so. The touchdown had to be one of the best Hail Marys we have seen over the last few seasons, and the early-morning setting makes it unparalleled. So we caught up with the two North Hall standouts to hear about the great game.

“Playing so late at night almost felt like a dream. I would look around while I was on the sideline and think to myself ‘is this really happening, or is this actually a dream?’ Right after the last touchdown pass, I couldn’t comprehend what had happened during the Hail Mary. It took some time to process that we had actually just won the game. I was so proud of Ty for going up and catching that ball,” Schlieman said.

Kemp followed up, “It was a crazy experience playing so late at night. We had about 3 hours of delay just sitting in the locker room, so it was pretty tough. I was just in shock after I caught it. It was a big game for us that we needed to win, so I’m glad it worked out like that.”

With a 3-0 start and several key wins over geographical rivals, North Hall is a consensus top 10 team in 3A. The offense has been humming, and both athletes are playing their best football to date.

“My senior year has been going really well so far. We started 3-0 and I won Georgia High School Football Daily Player of the Week,” Kemp said.

Schlieman continued, “The start of my junior season has been going great! It’s exciting to be back on the field and competing after my season ending femur fracture last year.”

In fact, Georgia High School Football Daily has highlighted both players in consecutive weeks. On the season, Schlieman now had 921 passing yards and 9 touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown. While Kemp, a steady senior that the North Hall staff raved about two weeks back, has 378 receiving yards on 21 catches and 5 touchdowns.

The recruiting scope and timeline are nearing for both athletes, but for Kemp, that’s just a few months away.

“I’ve heard from some schools like Anderson, Barry College, and Sewanee, but not much else,” Kemp said.

As of now, Kemp has no college visits planned. And for Schlieman, a junior QB who was sidelined during his sophomore year, last offseason’s camp tour has picked up the recruiting tempo into the season.

“I went to around 12 college camps during the summer, and I have continued to receive interest from a few schools like West Virginia, Charlotte, Tulsa, Cornell, Princeton, Davidson, App State, and a few others. I was at Clemson last weekend, I plan to be at Auburn on Saturday and then visiting several other schools where I attended camp as the fall goes on,” he said.

Both star athletes have been difference makers for North Hall this season. Their impact is immeasurable, and these types of game-winning plays not only change the outlook on the 2025 season but also their college futures.

As we always say on here, if you make big-time plays, then you can do it on Saturdays. Certainly, that is the case for Schlieman and Kemp, so be sure to follow @RecruitGeorgia on Twitter/X to hear the latest on the North Hall upperclassmen and athletes across the state of Georgia.
