Michigan State Lands Big Commit in Ohonba

James Ohonba, one of the top players in the state of Georgia, announced this evening his commitment to Michigan State. The 2018 star lineman out of Woodland made it all official when he Tweeted this note:

Ohonba has been one of the highest ranked players on our site, and in fact, is the current #2 rated player in North Georgia behind Trevor Lawrence. The big lineman stands around 6’4″-6’5″ and weighs over 300 pounds. He moves extremely well for his size, and his background on the hardwood is evident.

The 2018 lineman chose Michigan State over offers from most of the top ranked teams in the country. He whittled his list down to 4 teams in May, which included: Southern Cal, Alabama, Michigan, and LSU. So at the time the prospect of landing Ohonba did not look every good for Michigan State, especially since Coach Dave Warner had offered just over a month prior on March 29.

In yet, Michigan State kept recruiting him, and got the powerful road grading lineman to take an official visit last weekend with his mom and dad. Now that he was finally on campus, Ohonba got to see the facilities first hand, talk with the coaching staff, and enjoy the game day experience at Michigan State. The visit was all Ohonba needed to see, and after visiting Alabama, Clemson, Tennessee, and the many other top colleges pursuing him over the last year; the 2018 lineman was ready to make his decision.

So what type of player is Michigan State getting in Ohonba?

Well for one they are landing a very high-character athlete, and I really cannot express that enough. Ohonba never fell into all of the recruiting drama really. He didn’t constantly make tweets fishing for more followers, and just went about his business finding the best school for him. So the hype never really got there, but we are here to tell your right now – James Ohonba is the real deal.

When we first made his profile his sophomore year, it was so obvious he was going to play Power 5 football, and within a few days he already had his first offers. Somehow the coaches made him 2nd team All-Region that year, but there was one play that stood out (or maybe I’m not remembering well?) where he practically picked up a defensive lineman and pushed him backwards into the air. Just naturally pure brutal-strength.

Ohonba is the epitome of a student-athlete, ranking 13 out of the 330 students in his grade at Woodland High School. He has a near 4.0 GPA, and his quirky attitude and kind approach on life is refreshing in this industry. We fully expect the senior to have a very successful career at East Lansing both on and off the field.

He is now the #17 commit for Michigan State in the class of 2018. Ohonba joins fellow Georgia commit Christian Jackson out Lassiter High School. Also, his former Woodland teammate, Shakur Brown, enrolled over the summer. Moving forward, be on the lookout for more Georgia commits for Michigan State in this recruiting class and in the future as they are developing excellent ties in the state.

Thanks for sharing this article. I am very glad this young man has decided to become a Spartan. He sounds like the type of young man who will be an outstanding representative for Michigan State both on and off the field.
